By Mari Kuusinen, WE Microsoft Team Intern
This June, I flew more than ten thousand miles to participate in WE’s summer intern program. In my home country, Finland, I work in one of WE’s Global Alliance affiliates. The base level activities of PR in Finland are very similar to the ones here in the U.S., but everything happens here on a much bigger scale. Our agency in Finland has only 10 employees in total so this is a totally different work environment for me.
In a small agency, we each work with several clients and many of them act in several countries. A big part of my job in Finland is to localize global PR materials such as PR advisories and press releases. That is why I have to use English every day at work. My biggest takeaway from this internship might just be my improved competency in English.
Along with strengthening my PR and language skills here, I have learned a lot about American work culture. Believe it or not, the introverted Finns don’t often use small talk nor do they place great value on teamwork. In this brief video, I share these and other observations about PR in the U.S. and Finland. Enjoy!
