Fun. Challenging. Inspiring. My first six months at Waggener Edstrom (WE) have seen some of the best career highlights of my life. I’ve facilitated television shoots, dined at some of Johannesburg’s finest restaurants with our client from Paris, hosted One Young World delegates in Johannesburg, delivered media training to top executives, and next month I’m going to Kenya. The joys of PR, every day is a surprise and an adventure. If you enjoy a day that’s never routine, WE won’t disappoint.
When I joined, I forgot how stressful starting a new job can be. You’re not sure about how others perceive you, what they expect, if you’re meeting expectations and deadlines. But WE somehow made this uncertainty seem like a thrill. It provides the perfect balance between letting you dip your toes in the deep-end and providing structured guidance and support, allowing talent to flourish.
Then there are the people. I have never before been surrounded by such an inspiring, talented, and unique bunch of individuals. Somehow we all seem to come together united by the same love of what we do, and of course, our weekly ‘Jam of the Week’ competition, which entails choosing a different weekly theme for a favourite song submission. The competition is heated, even more so than the Foosball tournament that peaks during team drinks on the last Friday of every month. I’ve also had the privilege of knowing I was part of an initiative that brought someone tears of joy. Our WE Community Service programme means each of us gets 16 paid hours to take part in a community project of our choice. This year, a group of us painted a primary school classroom in Alexander Township, giving it a new lease of life and bringing so much joy for a seemingly small gesture.
The great thing about WE, is it’s more than just work, it’s a way of life that opens doors to a world of possibilities. And as I look to the future I only see so many more doors opening!
