How many countries did you talk to today? It’s a question my husband asked me recently. As Business Manager for Global Regions, I am part of the small team that operates the agency’s Global Alliance Network of affiliate agencies. That day, the answer was five: Britain, Germany, Turkey, South Africa and China.
One of the reasons that I have stayed with the agency for 22 years is the diversity of exciting opportunities the agency has given me. Today I am part of a thriving team that spans the globe but my role now is one of many different ones I’ve had within the agency. And I’ve been lucky enough to have the opportunity to reinvent myself in numerous careers.
From account work, to internal communications and managing the agency’s ‘Small Group Meetings’ (what we would now call WE Ignite), to becoming the agency’s first Recruiting manager, building our in-house recruiting team and being responsible for hundreds of employee hires. Then, project managing initiatives like implementing the agency’s first recruiting applicant tracking system, managing the agency’s organizational survey, to helping open the agency’s first office in India which was my introduction to the Global Alliance. There’s always been a new challenge around the bend.
Change has been the common thread throughout my time here and I’ve benefited greatly from it. It keeps me challenged, energized, learning on the job and offers a very flexible kind of career. In my work, projects often have urgent deadlines and require an around-the-clock, global effort. So I’ll get things started, then at the end of my day pass the baton to a colleague in Asia, who later hands it to a colleague in Europe, who then returns it to me when I’m back online bright and early the next morning.
As the agency continues to grow, we’re heading toward becoming an agency with a truly global way of thinking. Eventually, all of us will be global citizens. And then talking to five different countries in a day will be normal.
